Foldable and dual-screen laptops at 2020

Foldable PC

20:19 was the year that foldable went
from pipe dream to reality even if that
reality is a little bit shaky but
companies made one thing
perfectly clear they are not giving up
just yet and you can expect more fun and
probably failures in 2020 the biggest
splash literally was probably made by
Intel which showed up with a 17 inch
a folding tablet called Horseshoe Bend
it’s just a prototype that’s primarily
meant as a fact-finding experiment but
it definitely sparks the imagination of
what’s possible as companies figure out
how to make larger folding screens it’s
already doing its job though and showing
the challenges companies face for one we
never actually saw this thing close all
the way in person and while the hinge
was functional it was a bit rickety so
turns out big screens make the hinge
issue even more difficult to conquer but
still it worked pretty well for browsing
sites side-by-side when folded like a
book and when you bent it even further
and rested it on a table the bottom
portion turned into an on-screen
keyboard usually even a kickstand in the
back that allows you to set it up on a
desk like an all-in-one PC that you can
control with an external mouse and
keyboard Dell also rolled into Vegas
with some concept pcs in the form of the
duet and Ori the duet is the more
pedestrian of the two but probably also
easier to bring to market it’s basically
a take on the surface neo it’s a pair of
13.3-inch screens connected at a hinge
with a very thin bezel between them
there’s even a keyboard that attaches to
one screen and covers the bottom half of
it the Ori, on the other hand, is a single
13 point 4-inch screen that folds in
half there’s a pretty noticeable crease
down the middle but it really only
proved to distract when trying to read
text on a white background Dell
primarily use these prototypes to show
off its vision for how software might be
used to improve the foldable experience
as we all impatiently await the arrival
of Windows 10x that included a lot of
gestures like flicking a nap with three
fingers to send it to the other half of
the display or tapping it with four to
span it across both so it’s clear
companies are thinking hard about our
foldable future but what about the
present well that’s where Lenovo comes
in the ThinkPad x1 fold is an actual
the product that you can buy and we’ll ship
later this year for 2499 dollars
Lenovo’s machine is far more you
Stella terian looking them what Intel and
Dell brought to show off but that’s kind
of the point
it’s a 13.3-inch screen surrounded by
pretty chunky bezels so that you can
hold it comfortably there is a bit of a
the gap between the two halves when it’s
closed not unlike the calyx ii fold but
Lenovo is at least making the most of
this by designing a companion keyboard
that slides neatly into that space the
the fold will even wirelessly charge the
keyboard when it’s stashed in there
Lenovo also stuck a kickstand on the
back of the screen so when you need a
little bit more space for editing
spreadsheets and whatnot you can stick
it on your desk and use it like a
traditional pc or any of these machines
really practical I don’t know but
they’re definitely fun after all who
doesn’t love a good gimmicky computer
and if you want to see what other
forward-thinking or just plain weird
things come out of CES make sure to
follow along adding gadget comm
