every year in the united states an
average of 47 people get killed by
lightning strikes
now mountain lions have killed 24 people
in the last 100 years
what this shows us is that the a lot of
times the things we’re scared of may not
actually be the most dangerous because i
see a lot more searches a lot more
what do you do with your RV in lightning
first off the safest place to be in any sort of
electrical storm is in a building if you happen
to be in the in one of the built structures
that’s the far by far the safest if you’re in your
RV go ahead so basically you should have
some type of an emergency plan for bad
weather in the first place right you don’t
want to be stuck out in the middle of
the field you certainly don’t want to be in
a boat those are like really bad areas but
if you’re in your RV you can be relatively
safe and a couple of things to be aware
of first you really want to disconnect
your shore power connection many of
those wires that run around the campgrounds
are very close to the surface so if there’s a
near strike, those voltages can come in and
damage your electrical system inside of your
RV secondly because you’re inside of a metal
cage it forms something it’s called a Faraday
shield so even if your RV was directly hit by
lightning if you’re inside of the RV as long as
you’re not sticking your hands outside of
the windows you will be safe from the lightning
strike now this has nothing to do with having
rubber tires we’re having jack stands up or
anything it’s here quite often you hear the I’m
in an RV it’s got rubber tires so I’m safe right
Lightning has already come thousands of
feet down through the clouds it doesn’t care
about going another six inches sue rubber it
just doesn’t care but now that’s only if you
have an RV that has a metal frame or aluminum
skin and this will not you will not be protected

I’m gonna share with you some ugly
truths of travel trailers
and the ugly truth is one of the main reasons i
fantasize about a nice small class b and it’s
that the turning radius on a travel trailer
is awful and so if you need to turn around
inside of a campsite then you’re gonna
need that campsite to actually be pretty
dang big much much larger than you need
just to fit your rig inside of and we actually
run into this problem pretty often out in
the national forests like we could pull or we
could back our travel trailer in however it
would be really difficult to get it out for
whatever reason we ran into this random
problem a lot especially in one of our favorite
campsites that we stay at in Utah the campsite
is big enough for like two maybe three rigs
but it’s just not large enough for us to comfortably
turn our travel trailer around so as to be able to
have it face the way that we want to you know
because we have solar up on the roof of our
trailer and you know we want to kind of orient
our trailer with the sun is a specific way to maximize
the amount of solar we can bring in we actually
have to pull into the site and then turn the trailer
around so that the front of it is facing out and to
be able to do this we have to do this sort of funky
method where we pull in and we jackknife the truck
as much as we really can then we unhook the truck
in the trailer and then we back the truck back up
to the trailer uh in a different position so that we
can then pull out
