10 Sci-Fi Off Movies / That Messed Up What They Copied

it’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and where
Hollywood is concerned it’s certainly not unusual for even tremendously
talented filmmakers to borrow from that which came before but there’s
obviously a line and sometimes it’s painfully clear that a film is just
cynically ripping off a recent Mega hit in the hopes of breaking in some
easy cash which has been particularly prevalent in the Sci-Fi genre over
the years so let’s take a look at the worst copy your homework examples
in the genre shall we I’m youan this is walk culture and here are 10 sci-fi
ripoff movies that messed up what they copied

Number 10

lady Terminator of the many ripoffs of James Cameron’s the Terminator
that came out during the 1980s surely the most infamous of the lot is
1988’s Lady Terminator if the title might suggest that the film is nothing
more than a gender swapped Riff on Cameron’s film well wouldn’t be quite
Fair For Better or For Worse because in actual fact lady Terminator setup
is basically totally different revolving around a young Anthropologist called
Tanya played by Barbara and Constable who gets possessed by the soul of an
ancient sex goddess hello and then embarks on a murderous Rampage across
town from here countless key sequences from Cameron’s film are listlessly
aped including the nightclub shootout the car Chas police station Massacre
and most bafflingly even the eye removal scene even though the lady Terminator
isn’t actually a cyborg

Atlantic Rim uh gboss you think maybe this movie ripped off a good
movie Atlantic Rim is derivative sci-fi slot produced by marck Buster
Factory the Asylum cried literally from gal del Toro’s Pacific Rim and
raced through production fast enough that actually ended up releasing
days before delt Toro’s film now ripping off a $200 million Blockbuster
with a $500,000 budget was surely never going to produce worthwhile results
but even Beyond sheer spectacle Atlantic Rim has absolutely nothing to offer
fans of its inspiration despite the N Universal score for the movie and
the cynicism dripping from every pore of its creation it evidently
turned enough of a profit for the Asylum to produce a 2018 sequel
called Atlantic Rim Resurrection

Number 08

star crash this entire list could be filled out with low five films
which tried to stand on the shoulders of Star Wars but in the interest
of diversity resettled for just one 1978 star crash as ripoffs go this
one at least rocks a relatively distinguished cast including Caroline
Monroe Christopher Plumber David Hasselhoff and Joe spanel and a not
totally awful budget for the time in $4 million reduce still with barely
a third of star wars’s cash to play with Corners were inevitably going
to be cut and that’s laughably abundant in every aspect of the production
from the sets to the costumes and yes the visual effects too do I know
the funniest thing of all though director Luigi Coycontinues to insist
that he came up with the concept of the movie independently of Star Wars
but come on the movie opens with the exact same establishing spaceship
shot and it even has freaking laser swords

Number 07

lockout 2012’s lockout Stars Gus as Marian snow a former government agent
who in 2079 is framed for murder and sentenced to 30 years of stasis on
board a space prison before he begins his sentence though he’s offered a
way out you see the US president’s daughter Emily wck played by Maggie Grace
has been taken hostage aboard the very same Penitentiary with the inmates
overrunning the prison and so if snow can get her to safety he’ll have his
sentence commuted huh I could swear I’ve heard that plot somewhere before
something about a movie that involved an escape and it was set in New York
nah couldn’t be lockout has to be an original Jes aside even before the film
was released many noted The Narrative similarities between lockout and John
Carpenter’s dystopian action thrillers Escape from New York and escape from La
in fact what some might have generously termed an homage actually led to
Carpenter successfully suing the filmmakers for plagiarism in 2015 resulting
in shudio Europa Corp eventually being forced to pay out for €450,000 in Damages

Number 06

metamorphosis another highly influential sci-fi filmmaker whose work has been
imitated and flagrantly ripped off for decades the great David Cronenberg and
there’s surely no more aggreg just example of this than 1990s metamorphosis
George Eastman’s ropy hybrid of both cronenberg’s the fly and Stuart Gordon’s
cult classic 1985 horror comedy reanimator much like cronenberg’s joins
in particular metamorphosis sent us around a brilliant scientist here played
by Gan Le Brock whose attempt to test one of his scientific experiments on
himself causes him to begin transforming into a revolting monster the thing is
it’s clear that Eastman put effort into the movie and wasn’t driven by pure
Shady cynicism but metamorphosis ultimately still lacks both the Beating
Heart of cronenberg’s film and perhaps most crucially here it state-ofthe-art
physical makeup and Gore effects either way if the climax of The Fly is
devastatingly sad the rubber dinosaur looking suit use to metamorphosis as
finale is instead guaranteed to invoke rius laughter wherever the film is shown

Number 05

Warrior of the Lost World the enormous Global success of the first two Mad Max
films led to a glut of ripoffs throughout the 1980s including perhaps most
infamously 1980 3’s Warrior of the Lost World helmed by Future kickboxer director
David worth this Italian back production was thrown together for just $500,000 and
send us around the rider played by Robert giny who in a post-apocalyptic future
uses his high-tech motorcycle to battle Omega anevil orwellian State even if
the particulars of his narrative do differ from the Mad Max movies there’s no
mistaking the style and anesthetics it’s shamelessly pilfering albeit without
George Miller’s technical Ingenuity or Keen Eye towards evocative World
building the film does get a few points though for roping in the great Donald
Pleasants as the villainous prur always here for a bit of pleasant

Number 04

Earth to Echo Earth to Echo is basically what if ET but robot with its biggest
deviation from Steven Spielberg’s original being that it’s shot in a found
footage form focused on a group of kids to encounter a Fantastical alien
creature in the desert and attempt to help it escape from Shady agents so it
can get home yeah you’ve seen all the basic beats of this story done much
better many decades prior there are also obvious narrative and stylistic liftings
from other 8s Classics such as The Goonies and batteries not-included both
really solid films yet the requisite charm just isn’t there in abundance

Number 03

gamra the giant monster now we’re admittedly going to tread a little
carefully here because gamra has a lot of fans in his own right and quite
justly but in speaking specifically about 1965’s original movie gamra the
giant monster it was objectively produced as a knockoff of too’s hugely
successful 1954 film a little one called Godzilla the big hook although
gamra was also a rep Ian looking creature it was more specifically a giant
prehistoric Turtle albeit one similarly informed by the 1945 atomic bombings
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki yet produced for roughly 40% of Godzilla’s budget
gamra can’t hope to conceal its overpoweringly cheap thrown together nature
from the wer thin storytelling to the uninteresting action and generally
weak suspense this is basically just tring the fumes of its inspiration
but to be completely fair to the movie it nevertheless fared well
enough to establish gamra as a pop culture icon in his own right spawning
11 other films in the near Six decades since the original and though
the inaugural 65 film can’t help her feel like an earth Godzilla because
that’s precisely what it is gamra at least carved down a more unique
identity for itself in the more warmly received films that followed good
on you gamra keep on trucking

Number 02

Mac and Me a boy and his pet alien movie clearly designed in
the vein of ET Mac and Me was not merely intended to cash in
on ET success 6 years prior but was also a co-production
with McDonald’s yeah resulting in the company’s where is being
featured extensively throughout infamously the film features an
elaborate dance sequence set inside of mackie’s and not simply
content to invoke gross product placement just once later in
the film The titul Alien which just looks disgusting God look
at that guy he’s shown to be obsessed with Coca Cola oh the
the 80s business Synergy it’s just dripping off this one
positively bursting with it just look at his face oh the intent
was clearly to make a heartwarming ET ripoff while Shing for
companies that supported the movie and yet the film is so tonally
ill-considered in turn so lacking in genuine warmth that it’s
absolutely impossible to take seriously and

Number 01

The Day the Earth stopped one more contribution from the Asylum to
close us out now then with The Day the Earth stopped a ripoff of
sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still I shouldn’t really need to finish
that one you already know what the movie is called the film was released on DVD
just 3 days before the 2008 Keanu reev starring remake hit Cinemas prompting
Fox to threaten a whole lawsuit but given that the Asylum is precisely aware
of how far they can push the whole ripoff Gambit the legal threats
ultimately went nowhere bizly directed by actor C Thomas how of all people who
also stars in the film The Day of the Earth stopped as a painfully
unimaginative we have it at home Elliot Invasion flick that can’t even settle
for being the most basically lazy competent RI off of its inspiration the
leading dialogue horrible performances and of course the garbage VFX and sure
this lacks all the intelligence thought-provoking content and even simple Thrills
of the films that inspired it it’s not merely bad it’s
oppressively dull
